Councilmember Julie Hsieh immigrated to the United States at age six, arriving in Dallas without speaking English and facing the challenges of adapting to a new culture. Through ESL classes, determination, and her love of music, she built confidence and found her voice. She later trained as a family physician, practicing medicine in Bellevue before discovering a deep passion for the arts.
Councilmember Hsieh has built a career defined by service, creativity, and community connection. After years in medicine, she founded the Yuan Ru Art Center, a gallery that showcases artists from around the world and brings diverse communities together. Her work in the arts strengthened her belief in cultural exchange, storytelling, and the power of creativity to unite people. She also volunteered extensively in the Mercer Island School District, serving on PTAs, arts councils, and multiple community boards.
Her volunteer leadership eventually led community members to encourage her to run for office. During her campaign, she focused on accessibility, education, and community well‑being. In 2023, she was elected to the Mercer Island City Council with 57 percent of the vote, becoming one of the few Chinese American elected officials in the region.
As a councilmember, Hsieh supports Mercer Island Youth and Family Services, mental health programs in schools, and assistance for seniors and families. She also launched monthly community chats to ensure residents feel heard, welcomed, and connected to their local government. Her background in medicine, the arts, and community service informs her commitment to building a vibrant, inclusive, and engaged Mercer Island.
Councilmember Hsieh encourages young people not to worry about having a perfect plan. She believes life is not a straight line and that exploring different interests — whether in science, art, or community service — helps build confidence, curiosity, and purpose. She hopes her journey inspires youth to stay engaged, follow their passions, and contribute to their communities.
