Conrad Lee, former Mayor of Bellevue, has dedicated more than three decades to public service while exemplifying the values of perseverance, civic engagement, and community leadership. His journey to the United States began after his mother, determined to provide better educational opportunities following his father's passing, sent him to study in Hong Kong before he pursued an engineering degree at the University of Michigan.
At Michigan, Lee was exposed to diverse cultures and perspectives that deepened his understanding of equality, inclusion, and the challenges faced by immigrants and minorities. These experiences shaped his belief that meaningful change comes from working hard, speaking up, and actively participating in one's community.
After settling in Bellevue, Lee translated those values into decades of volunteer service. He supported numerous nonprofit organizations, served as a Cub Scout master, coached youth sports, and became deeply involved in local civic life. These experiences taught him that effective leadership is built on trust, communication, and a genuine commitment to serving others.
Elected to the Bellevue City Council for eight terms over 32 years, including serving as Mayor, Lee played a key role in Bellevue's remarkable transformation from a quiet suburban community into a thriving urban and technology center. He believes this success reflects the collective efforts of the entire community. Today, he encourages young people to pursue education, work hard, stay engaged in civic life, and strive to contribute even more than previous generations.
